Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Not everything can be solved. ACT helps you make room for what is there, while choosing what really matters to you.

What it is about

What it is and who it is for

Sadness, tension and uncertainty are part of life; the harder you fight them, the more room they take. ACT turns the question around: not “how do I get rid of this”, but “what kind of life do I want to live, even with this”.

We practise making room for unpleasant thoughts and feelings without letting them take the lead. And we map what you truly find important, so you can take steps in that direction again.

Sound familiar?

  • You worry a lot and thinking doesn’t get you out of it.
  • You have chronic complaints or something that won’t go away.
  • You function fine, but it feels empty or aimless.
  • You avoid situations out of fear of what you will feel.

How it works

How we go about it

1

Stepping out of the struggle

You learn to see thoughts and feelings for what they are: events in your head, not the truth and not the boss.

2

Knowing what counts

We explore your values: how do you want to be in life, what kind of partner, parent, friend or colleague do you want to be?

3

Doing what matters

Concrete steps towards those values, even when it feels uncomfortable. Start small, but start.

What to expect

Practical

  • Exercises in attention and flexibility, nothing airy-fairy.
  • A well-founded approach that also works for complaints that don’t simply go away.
  • More direction and less fighting with yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is ACT mindfulness?

ACT uses elements of attention training, but the goal is different: not to relax, but to live according to what matters to you, even when it is hard.

Can ACT be combined with CBT?

Yes. In practice I often use elements of both, depending on what works for you.

Is this available in English?

Yes. Sessions are available in English and in Dutch.
