Cognitive behavioural therapy

Your thoughts largely determine how you feel and what you do. With CBT you learn to recognise those patterns and break them step by step.

What it is about

What it is and who it is for

If you think “I’m going to mess this up”, you feel tense and cancel the appointment. The relief that follows makes the thought even stronger next time. That is how a pattern keeps itself going.

In cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) you learn to recognise and examine those patterns. Is that thought actually true? What happens if you do it differently just once? We work with concrete exercises, often between sessions too.

Sound familiar?

  • Worrying, low mood or low self-esteem.
  • Tension, panic or avoiding things you actually want to do.
  • Habits you want to get rid of.
  • Sleep problems linked to rumination and worry.

How it works

How we go about it

1

Recognising patterns

We map which thoughts, feelings and behaviours reinforce each other in the situations that trouble you.

2

Examining and trying out

You test your thoughts against reality and try new behaviour, in small, feasible steps.

3

On your own

You learn the technique so well that you can apply it yourself, long after the sessions have ended.

What to expect

Practical

  • A structured, goal-oriented approach with a clear beginning and end.
  • Exercises for at home, tailored to what you can handle.
  • An approach that is scientifically well-founded and widely used.

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions are needed?

That varies per person and per question. Often it is a series of sessions over a few months; we evaluate regularly.

Do I have to do homework?

Practising between sessions makes the difference. We keep it small and feasible, and it is never an obligation.

Is this available in English?

Yes. Sessions are available in English and in Dutch.
